Tata Indicom Broadband
Finally switched to the [:http://tataindicombraodband.in|Tata Indicom Broadband Service] from BSNL dataone today. The Tata Indicom folks made me wait for almost a month for the connection, but first look at it seems to say that it was worth the wait.
Few good things I observed about the service:
* They provide a very good quality D-Link modem/router.
* Pricing is good.
* No installation charges (on advance payment for 4 months).
* No limits on data transfers.
But the connection wasn't as straightforward and easy to use on Ubuntu as on Windows. There are no Linux drivers for the USB interface.
The first thing I tried was to get hold of the the latest kubuntu iso torrent :)
Azureus kept warning me of the "NAT problem", so instead of disabling the NAT on the router, I enabled UPnP on it which made things just fine.
Again, DNS entries kept flushing on this connection - thanks to DHCP and slowing things down, so this gave a temporary relief:
sudo chattr +i /etc/resolv.conf
Now, to try and figure out how I can use a wifi router over this, and make the router they've supplied to just act as a bridge ;)

TATA INDICOM THE WORST OF THE WORST
I am one of the unfortunate VSNL BroadBand subscribers for the past 3 years. In the initial stages, prior to implementation I was given a rosy picture of continuous connection, etc. and I paid Rs.8000/- for the connection. Within a fortnight they started showing their true colour - NO CONNECTION- I WAS GETTING CONNECTION IRREGULARLY AT REGULAR INTERVALS.
1] Any number of complaints - NO IMPACT
2] The TATAINDICOM BROAD BAND starts and ends with CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT, which is manned by persons who are not having adequate knowledge.
3] I opted for a temporary connection as per their requirement, - still there is no msg from them
4] This is the only ISP without TOLLFREE number.
5] It will take a minimum of 5 mts for you to hear a human voice - for 45 seconds Rs.1/- will be charged
for your telephone bill - Before you hear a voice you would have shelved out Rs.6/-
6] Any complaint call will result in a minimum cost of Rs.8 - 10 to you - LESSON - NEVER COMPLAIN TO VSNL.
7] There are no officials at VSNL.
8] CUSTOMER SERVICE is omnipresent and powerless.
9] While you will be asked to refer any matter to customer service, nothing will be done and you will be never informed.
10] Your duty ends with informing - start using the BROADBAND SERVICE when they feel it convenient to give you.
11] Their accounting / billing department is the worst -even a petty shop will function better.
12] You can laugh your heart out - IF YOU WANT TO COMPLAIN AGAINST CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT, COMPLAIN TO THE CUSTOMER SERVICE - NO SUPERVISOR / MANAGER / DIRECTOR, ETC.
13] VSNL follows the policy of rectifying the complaints in 24 hours - HOW? -
ONCE YOU COMPLAIN AND WHEN THEY ARE SURE YOU HAVE RECD YOUR CONNECTION, YOU WILL GET A CALL FROM THEM ASKING ABOUT THE STATUS - AT THAT POINT OF TIME THE CONNECTION MAY BE THERE - YOU SAY "o k ". the COMPLAINT IS ROUNDED OFF.
BANG - GOES THE CONNECTION IN ANOTHER 15 MTS.
REQUESTED FOR CHANGING THE SYSTEM TO CONFIRMING THE STATUS THE NEXT DAY - NO USE
FEARING THE TELEPHONE BILL OF ANOTHER Rs.15/-, WE LEAVE IT.
NICE AND INNOVATIVE IDEA TO AVOID CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS.
14] NEVER WILL YOU RECEIVE ANY EMAIL FROM VSNL, EXCEPT YOUR BILL, WHICH YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY
15] NO REDUCTIONS WILL BE MADE FOR THE DAYS WHEN CONNECTION IS NOT PROVIDED TO YOU
16] NOTHING WILL BE PAID TO YOU WHEN YOU LEAVE [AS PER THE AGREEMENT, WHICH CAN BE SEEN FROM THE NET AND WHICH YOU WILL COME TO KNOW ONLY AFTER YOU SUBSCRIBE]
